I guess let's just be glad EQ developer you know are not designing aircraft or artificial hearts or EKG systems. So in practice, if you boost 5k at 2db with a specific bandwidth you expect a different result than 5k boosted by 2db at that specific bandwidth? I understand there are different types of Eq plugins like linear phase vs minimal phase and some other implementations and those would produce different result but respectively they should not be different.įrom what I understand about plugins is the developers often need to implement some tricks for real-time considerations that can produce slightly different results, but it is still wrong and the plugin is flawed based on filter equation that are not negotiable. And yes unless the EQs are a color plugins (should be avoided) it should null, I'm not implying they do.
In the digital world it is possible at least with higher sample and bit rates.
That is pretty much impossible in the analog world obviously due to design implementation and component quality (or lack there of). So when two EQs don't null, it doesn't mean one of them is defective in any way, unless you know they are both emulating exactly the same filters.I'm talking about filter theory and in theory all equalizers should null in both the analog and digital domain. The same would clearly apply to EQs from different developers-they all have to choose what those curves will look like, and there's no reason to assume they'll all choose identically, nor that any one set of choices is correct. Check out pages 6-10 of the TDR VOS SlickEQ manual-here's an EQ plugin that wouldn't null with itself if set to different filter models, even when set otherwise identically. This would be true if "EQ" were one monolithic thing, but it's not. I find in the digital world DMG Equilibrium has that quality to it when using a long impulse length (which unfortunately does require a fair amount of CPU cycles) I think that's why I use a high end tube EQ on my stereo mix bus - as you say - it requires very little thought or attention - even small moves sound musical and effortless. Not having much time or attention for EQ could mean that the quality of your EQ is very important, on the theory that the best EQ should be the one that requires the least fiddling to get to the sound you want.Good point.
